Gallery Group Envisions a More Inclusive Future for Specialist Disability Accommodation

December 12, 2023

Gallery Group, a dedicated builder and developer with a mission to positively influence communities in Southeast Queensland, is responding proactively to proposed changes in the Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) landscape. These changes align with a broader effort to address challenges in the housing and living support sector, fostering a more inclusive and connected environment.

For years, the SDA market has faced hurdles in delivering diverse and innovative housing solutions, leaving participants with limited choices. Outdated group homes persist, and service models, despite sporadic innovation, show slow adaptation. A staggering 55% of SDA enrolled places are in either group homes or aging stock, highlighting a pressing need for transformation.

The challenges extend to participants transitioning from previous disability service systems, facing limited opportunities for contemporary housing. The struggle for accessible and affordable housing persists outside the SDA, impacting people with disabilities, especially those with high support needs.

Gallery Group recognises these issues and is committed to driving positive change. The proposed removal of the Improved Liveability category is part of a larger effort to align SDA offerings with the diverse needs of participants. This initiative reflects a commitment to participant-led designs, ensuring housing and living supports prioritise individual requirements.

Renee Martin, SDA Specialist at Gallery Group, states, "Our focus is on bringing designs to the market that prioritise the needs of participants. While these changes are in the proposal stage, we take them seriously and keep them in close consideration as we continue to develop our design range in this space."

The call for the removal of the Improved Liveability category is part of a comprehensive set of recommendations aiming to improve the SDA market. Gallery Group emphasises collaboration with participants, the SDA sector, and the disability community in shaping these changes.

As Gallery Group navigates these shifts, the company remains committed to providing timely updates to investors and stakeholders. The vision is clear: participants should have access to a diverse range of innovative housing options, promoting choice, and improving overall living conditions.

RBA holds cash rate at April meeting, May cut a “done deal”

No one was surprised at the 2:30 pm announcement that the bank wasn’t cutting rates. Markets had priced in less than a 9% chance that rates would go down. This was an easy call and not an overly exciting discussion among property commentators.

It may be 12 months later than experts and economists initially expected, but the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Board has finally seen enough to begin easing its tight fiscal policy, which has kept rates at a 13-year high for the past 18 months.
