SEQ Set on Creating Reliable and Safer Road Networks

February 12, 2020

The South East Queensland or SEQ is well on its way to having a world-renowned transport infrastructure of road connectivity with an extensive road network projects and plans. Firstly, the region is focusing on upgrading critical road assets.

Brisbane

SEQ
Brisbane focuses on road safety

The 2019 - 2020 road resurfacing program in Brisbane is nearing completion. This $360 million program will make suburban streets and major roads safer and smoother for everyday use. The program also aims to minimise the risks of accidents and damages to drivers and commuters. The council is also overseeing more than 10 road intersection and bridge upgrades. The Wildlife Awareness Monitor program is also well underway to protect the city’s biodiversity and lower vehicle accidents. These monitors will go up on roads with high wildlife presence. The Wesley Way recently opened, cutting driving time from Eden’s Crossing to Brisbane. People can now travel from Mt Juillerat Drive directly to the Centenary Highway in Redbank Plains. The Albion Exchange $750 development project was given the green light. The $750 million transit-oriented projects will greatly improve North Brisbane Congestion. The construction and improvement of Busways throughout Brisbane are a top priority. According to the Queensland Government, “By separating buses from general traffic, busways allow for fast, frequent and reliable public transport.”

The Gold Coast is looking ahead with a road masterplan until 2028. Mayor Tom Tate said, “keeping the city’s road network flowing is a social and economic driver. ”The decade long plan looks to manage traffic congestion, improve safety and organise transport modes in the right places they are necessary. Movement and access are the two main purposes of the plan with freight, traffic, public transport, active transport and community coming in second. The city’s population will reach at least 870,000 by 2036 making major road network upgrades necessary. Another major road infrastructure is the Coomera Connector by the Queensland Government. The next step will be developing the stage 1 business case in 2020. The Coomera Connector will be established between Loganholme and Nerang, east of the Pacific Motorway (M1). The road corridor will have 6 traffic lanes for public transport, cycling and walking. The major project will support the growing residential and business communities in the Gold Coast and Logan.

Sunshine Coast

SEQ
Sunshine Coast focused on improving road accessibility

In Sunshine Coast, the Bruce Highway Upgrade, one of the largest road infrastructure programs in Queensland is making headway. As of 2019, more than 50 bridges, 20 rest stops, 122km safer roadsides and 154m wide centreline treatments are done. Upon completion, the major north-south commuter corridor will connect coastal population centres from Brisbane to Cairns.Several road and intersection projects were completed by 2019 including the Kawana health precinct. This $22 million project improved access to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Moreton Bay

SEQ
Moreton Bay to establish pathways for all forms of transportation

The Petrie intersection upgrade to improve connectivity throughout the Moreton Bay Region will start construction in late 2020. Anzac Avenue, Dayboro Road and Gympie Road Intersection are the critical road assets of this project. The Moreton Bay Regional Council is also planning to start construction for the Chelmsford and Lamington road extension projects within the 2021/22 financial year. The council will improve accessibility to community infrastructures by improving major transport corridors. Also by establishing cyclist/pedestrian and public transport connections. According to the council’s infrastructure strategy, “Access to facilities will be inclusive and for all abilities, including access by foot and by bicycle as well as public transport connecting facilities to the wider community.”

SEQ’s Livability

SEQ’s road networks will be of world-class status soon. All regions are hopeful in improving transportation in general, public transportation, road safety, road access, traffic congestion and more. That is why smart investors are turning to the SEQ as they see more investment value. These road and transportation projects will be of value for many years to come. In conclusion, the growing population and employment market will both benefit greatly from these developments.
